For example: If you are selling "shirts" it would be a waste of time and money to build a site or write ads for the generic keyword "shirts"...this would create a lot of traffic to your site but would it be targeted traffic? Would it be buying traffic?

In order for the keywords to be profitable you have to go after what we call long tail, buyer keywords. So if we stick with the shirt example, you may be selling blue shirts, but instead of simply going after the keywords "blue Shirts" you may want to focus even more and go after a more profitable keyword phrase such as "buy blue shirts online" or maybe just "buy blue shirts" or even something like "blue shirts for sale". Those are buyer keywords and terms like that typically are the most profitable keywords.
